Biodiversity and Bees

We had a visit from a local beekeeper, Bryan Riney, who taught us all about bees and biodiversity. We learned about the three types of bees, the honeybee, the bumblebee and the solitary bee. In the hive of a honeybee there is one queen, thousands of workers and thousands more drones! The Queen has a very important job. She has to lay eggs in the hive. The queen bee only stings other queens, not humans. All the worker bees are female. They collect pollen and nectar form the flowers. A worker bee only goes 3 miles away from its hive. Without worker bees a hive would have no honey. We enjoyed our visit from Bryan. Go raibh maith agat!
