Librarians’ Visit

June 9th was a very exciting day in Scoil Barra Naofa as two Cork librarians Mary and Rachel visited the school and held very interesting and informative sessions with each class in the library. This visit was the culmination of the Reading Focus at school in February and led to DEAR being adopted in each class. The Student Council wishes to especially thank Aoife Fleury who was the liaison between the school and the librarians. Each class heard a story and found out about the amazing services offered by the local libraries. It would definitely be very beneficial for all students to join and would encourage Reading throughout the summer. If anyone wishes to join, please pick up a form from Miss Marshall in Junior Infants. Here are some of the wonderful services and interesting information about the library.
1. It is free to join and you can take up to 12 books each week. These can be renewed online if you can’t make it to the library each week. If you are on holidays anywhere in Ireland the books may be returned to that library and you may borrow books from the local library and return them to your own one when you get home.
2. Borrow box is an amazing service which allows you to log in and download books directly to a phone or table. After 14 days they are removed from your device but you can opt to renew them online. Again this is a free service and might be very handy for travel as it also includes audiobooks.
3. Summer Stars Reading Programme is an initiative to encourage holiday reading. Each child gets a Reading Stars Card where they record the books they have read or books that others have read to them. At the end of the summer, each child, whether they have read one book or a hundred, is presented with a certificate.
4. Every Friday at 3 pm Mary holds a story time session in Carrigaline library which would be a rewarding and fun experience for all children. You could have heard a pin drop in the library as she read to each of the classes.
5. The focus in the Cork Libraries for children this summer is on Space and Space books. There is a link between research being conducted by UCC including interactive activities and scaled models that will fire a child’s imagination and feed their curiosity.
6. The libraries offer audio books, dvds,  guest speakers, set activities and appropriate online activities to children of all ages.
Finally the gift of reading is an invaluable life tool for each and every child. Please consider joining the library and to make a library trip part of the timetable of events for the summer. In an increasingly expensive world it is fabulous to know that all children have access to this amazing free resource. Happy Reading!
