News for November 2014

Week 1

An Taisce Visit : On Wednesday we had a second visit from Camilla Tunney from An Taisce. She gave a talk to all the classes about the Travel theme and the aims and objectives of the programme. She wished us all well with our first walk next week.


Green School Meeting : The Green School Committee had a meeting on Wednesday and welcomed new Parent member, Aoife McCarthy, on board. The following matters were discussed :

  • Our first WOW day
  • Badges for the Committee
  • A new mascot
  • Added incentive for the Golden Boot Award
  • Pedometers for children
  • Update on reduction of car usage, battery and phone collection and waste free lunches

Maths. Recovery : Well done to First Class who completed a four week Maths. Recovery programme on Thursday. Our thanks to all staff involved in delivering the programme. Maith sibh !

Tag Rugby : Good luck to Third and Fourth Classes who began a three week Tag Rugby programme with Vincent O’ Leary from Carrigaline on Thursday. Ádh mór oraibh !

Cycle Training : On Friday Fifth Class began a four week cycle training programme with Katie and Ruth from Cycle Sense from Skibbereen. This programme is running in conjunction with our Green Flag Travel theme and is partly subsidised by An Taisce.

Action Day : Many thanks to all those who supported our garden action day on Saturday. A huge amount of work was carried out by staff, parents, friends and neighbours. We are so grateful to all those who were so enthusiastic and gave so generously of their time. Thanks also to those Parents who brought sandwiches and cakes. All were very much appreciated. Special thanks to Parent, Emma Murphy, who was in charge of operations on the day helped by Norma Hahnel, Parent and Board of Management member. We are also indebted to Greg Hanna who supplied the tractor and trailer and did an enormous amount of clearing. Emma has some very exciting plans for the future development of our garden so do watch this space…..

Week 2

Team Hope : Many thanks to all those who supported our Team Hope appeal. We collected 110 boxes which was terrific and will make a big difference to the lives of the world’s poorest children. Go raibh maith agaibh !

WOW Day : Well done to all those who braved the elements and joined us for our very first WOW day. It was great to see such a huge crowd. Special thanks to our Green Committee, lollipop ladies, Kacie and Holly and all the staff who joined us for the first day. Let’s walk towards the future dream !

Ceremony of LIght : Congratulations to Fifth and Sixth Classes who were enrolled for their Confirmation in a very special ceremony on Thursday evening. Our thanks to Ms. Matthews and Ms. Kelly for preparing the children and to Fr. Seán for all his help. We wish the children well as they continue the preparations for their special day on the 13th March.

Sponsored Walk : A huge thank you to everyone who supported our recent WOW Sponsored Walk organised by our Student Council. An amazing €2,296 was raised which was a terrific response. Well done to everyone who contributed. Cinema tickets were given to the children who raised the most money. Well done to Billy Hanna (J.Infs.), Bo Parkes (S. Infs.), Tony Geraghty (First Class), Lucy O’ Connell (Second Class), Tara Kennedy (Third Class), Rion Mulcahy (Fourth Class), Alana Garvey (Fifth Class) and Luke Hegarty (Sixth Class). Go raibh maith agaibh go léir.

Week 3

Diocesan Advisor’s Visit : On Monday we had a visit from Mrs. Bríd O’ Callaghan, one of the diocesan advisors in Cork and Ross. She went to see all the classes, listened to songs and prayers and talked about the Alive O Programme. She was very pleased with the efforts of all the children and gave them all homework off ! Well done !

Christmas Card Winners: Well done to the winners of this year’s Christmas Card Competition : Freya Boylan (J. Infs.), Ali Hughes (S. Infs.), Lauren Coughlan (First Class), Abby O’ Neill (Second Class), Adam O’ Flynn (Third Class), Simon Pritchard (Fourth Class), Kate Horgan (Fifth Class) and Erin McKinney (Sixth Class). Comhghairdeas !

Football Blitz : Well done to our girls who played Shanbally N.S. and Gurrane N.S. on Tuesday. They looked fantastic in their new kit ! They played well but came up against stronger opposition on the day. The boys had a better day on Wednesday coming second overall, defeating Ballinadee N.S., St. Mary’s N.S. and Shanbally N.S. Medals will be presented to the boys at our next assembly. Maith sibh !

Science Workshop : On Friday Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Classes had a visit from Dr. Angela McGlynn (Anyone 4 Science). She gave a very interesting presentation. The children experimented with coke, salt water and lemon juice to see which one contained the most electricity. They also did experiments to show that we all have electricity in us too. Science is cool !!

Week 4

Student Council Meeting : The Student Council held their meeting on Monday. The following items were discussed :
